U.S., Afghan Forces Arrest Taliban Facilitator
From an International Security Assistance Force Joint Command News Release

WASHINGTON, Jan. 8, 2013 - A combined Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban facilitator today in the Pul-e Khumri district of Afghanistan's Baghlan province, military officials reported.

The facilitator belonged to a group of insurgents who carry out bomb attacks in the province. He was personally responsible for assisting in the transfer of improvised explosive devices and conducting IED attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

In other Afghanistan operations today:

-- A combined force killed two insurgents, including the Taliban leader Khanjar, in Nangarhar province's Khugyani district. Khanjar, also known as Izat and Abu Khaled, directed attacks against Afghan government officials and Afghan and coalition forces. The security force also arrested a local Taliban leader who oversaw the transfer and delivery of weapons and ammunition.

-- An Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, arrested two insurgents during a search for a Haqqani network leader in Khost province's Sabari district. The Haqqani leader directs and conducts attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

In an operation yesterday, a combined force killed Taliban leader Mohammad Sayed and another insurgent in Helmand province's Washer district. Sayed distributed weapons and ammunition to Taliban fighters and was trying to acquire rockets for attacks targeting Afghan government officials.

Combined Force Detains Taliban Leader in Ghazni Province

WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 2013 - A combined Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader, and detained a suspected insurgent in the Andar district of Afghanistan's Ghazni province today, military officials reported.

The leader commanded a group who organized and executed attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, along with overseeing the placement of improvised explosive devices, officials said.
In other Afghanistan operations today:

-- A combined force in Helmand province's Nahr-e Saraj district arrested a senior Taliban leader who played a major role in narcotics trafficking to fund Taliban operations and commanded insurgent fighters who attack Afghan and coalition forces. The security force also detained a suspected insurgent.
In operations yesterday:

-- A combined force arrested the senior Taliban leader for Helmand province's Nad-e Ali district during a security operation in the province's Now Zad district. The leader provided operational guidance to Taliban insurgents and acquired and distributed homemade explosives, weapons and ammunition to suicide bombers. The security force also detained several suspected insurgents and seized firearms.

-- In Nangarhar province's Khugyani district, a combined force detained a suspected insurgent and seized numerous weapons during a search for a Taliban leader who directs attacks against Afghan government officials and Afghan and coalition forces.

In Jan. 4 operations:
-- A combined force in Helmand province's Nahr-e Saraj district arrested a Taliban leader who planned and executed attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and oversaw acquisition and distribution of weapons, ammunition and bombs to insurgent fighters. The security force also detained two suspected insurgents.
-- In Logar province's Pul-e Alam district, security combined force arrested a member of the Haqqani network who planned attacks against Afghan government officials. He also organized and managed the delivery of weapons and materials to Haqqani insurgents for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. The security force also detained a suspected insurgent.

Security Force Arrests Taliban Leader in Kandahar Province

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 3, 2013 - An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader during an operation in the Shah Wali Kot district of Afghanistan's Kandahar province today, military officials reported.

The arrested Taliban leader was responsible for the planning and execution of vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, officials said. He also oversaw the transfer and delivery of IEDs to insurgents operating throughout the district.

Also today, a combined force arrested three insurgents during a search for a Haqqani facilitator in the Khost district of Khost province. The sought-after Haqqani facilitator coordinates the movement and transfer of weapons, explosives and IED components to insurgents within the district.

In Afghanistan operations yesterday:

-- Taliban leader Mubariz Jaan was killed by a combined force in the Andar district of Ghazni province. Mubariz Jaan was responsible for gathering intelligence and directing attacks against Afghan civilians and government officials. Prior to his death, Mubariz Jaan was coordinating attacks against Afghan police in the province.

-- A combined force arrested a Taliban leader and killed one other insurgent in the Pul-e Khumri district of Baghlan province. The arrested Taliban leader financed IEDs, other weapons and ammunition for insurgent attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. Prior to his detention, he was facilitating the movement of IEDs and suicide bombers for attacks in the province.

-- In the Hisarak district of Nangarhar province, a combined force killed Taliban leader Abdullah and four other insurgents. Abdullah was responsible for directing and participating in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. Prior to his death, Abdullah was reporting the movement of Afghan and coalition forces to insurgent leaders.

Combined Force Arrests Taliban Leader, Seizes IED Materials

WASHINGTON, Jan. 2, 2013 - An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader in the Shah Wali Kot district of Afghanistan's Kandahar province today, military officials reported.

The arrested Taliban leader provided weapons and ammunition to insurgent fighters in the central Arghandab and southwest Shah Wali Kot districts, officials said. He also planned and coordinated improvised explosive device attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces.

The security force also seized IED-making materials during the operation, officials said.

Also today, a combined force arrested a member of the Haqqani network in the Pul-e 'Alam district of Logar province. The arrested Haqqani insurgent planned and executed attacks against Afghan government officials as well as Afghan and coalition forces. He was also responsible for the movement of weapons and provided funds to Haqqani fighters operating in the Pul-e 'Alam district.

In Afghanistan operations yesterday:

-- A combined force arrested a Taliban leader in the Panjwa'i district of Kandahar province. The arrested Taliban leader directed IED operations in the Zharay and Panjwa'i districts. He also provided supplies, weapons and ammunition to insurgents for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Kandahar province.

-- A combined force arrested a Taliban leader in the Khanabad district of Kunduz province. The arrested Taliban leader organized insurgents and procured IEDs and other weapons for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

-- In the Sabari district of Khost province, a combined force arrested a local Haqqani leader, detained several other suspects, and seized multiple weapons. The Haqqani leader planned and executed direct-fire and IED attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and oversaw IED emplacements in the district.

In Dec. 31, 2012, operations:

-- In the Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province, a combined force killed the Taliban leader, Nurullah Khan, and one other insurgent. Nurullah Khan, also known as Shaker, transported and distributed weapons for insurgents in Kunduz province. At the time of his death, Nurullah Khan was coordinating the movement of explosives for use in a future IED attack.

-- In the Arghandab district of Kandahar province, a combined force arrested a local Taliban leader and detained three other suspects. The arrested Taliban leader coordinated IED attacks and distributed IEDs and IED-making components to insurgents.

-- In the Khost district of Khost province, a combined force arrested a Haqqani leader and killed one other insurgent. The arrested Haqqani leader planned the Dec. 26, 2012, vehicle-borne IED suicide attack against Forward Operating Base Chapman.

Combined Force Arrests Taliban Leader in Helmand Province

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10, 2012 - A combined coalition and Afghan security force arrested a Taliban leader in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Afghanistan's Helmand province today, military officials reported.

The leader was a weapons facilitator directly involved in coordinating attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces, officials said. He also directed assassinations, coordinated the shipment and distribution of bomb-making materials and weapons, and provided intelligence to Taliban senior leadership operating in the province.

The security force also detained three suspected insurgents and seized an Afghan army uniform.

In other Afghanistan operations today:

-- A combined force in Kandahar province's Arghandab district arrested a Taliban facilitator who organized high-profile attacks while financing the manufacture of improvised explosive devices and vehicle-borne bombs. He also trained insurgents for IED attacks. The security force also detained two suspected insurgents.

-- In Khost province's Terayzai district, a combined force arrested a Haqqani network leader responsible for commanding high-profile attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and the coordination and movement of IEDs and Haqqani insurgents. He conducted IED testing and was overseeing the shipment of weapons to support an impending attack. The security force also seized weapons and detained a suspected insurgent.

-- A combined force in Wardak province's Nerkh district arrested a Taliban leader who directed attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and oversaw IED operations.

-- In Balkh province's Balkh district, a combined force detained four insurgents during a search for a Haqqani network facilitator who coordinates suicide bombings. The security force also seized 10 pounds of illegal narcotics.

In Afghanistan operations yesterday:

-- A combined force in Paktia province's Sayyid Karam district arrested a Haqqani network leader who controlled a group that conducts IED attacks against Afghan officials and Afghan and coalition forces. He also built, stored and transported IEDs for insurgents operating in the area. The security force also detained a suspected insurgent and seized IED-making materials, grenades and a large amount of ammunition.

-- In Kandahar province's Maiwand district, a combined force arrested a Taliban facilitator who was directly involved in IED operations and facilitated suicide-bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also oversaw the transport of ammunition and IED-making materials to insurgents. The security force also detained two suspected insurgents.

-- A combined force in Helmand province's Nahr-e Saraj district arrested a Taliban leader who procured heavy weapons, ammunition and bomb-making materials and advised Taliban insurgents. The security force also detained two suspected insurgents.

-- In Balkh province's Chimtal district, a combined force arrested a Taliban leader responsible for planning and conducting attacks and kidnappings and for weapons procurement.

In other recent operations:

-- A combined force in Helmand province's Nahr-e Saraj district arrested a Taliban leader Dec. 8. He distributed IED materials, detained a suspected insurgent and seized bomb-making materials.

-- In Uruzgan province's Shahid-e-Hasas district Dec. 7, Afghan and coalition security forces seized and destroyed weapons, ammunition and three motorcycles used by insurgents. Several insurgents were killed and three suspected insurgent were detained during the operation.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 13, 2012 - A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained an insurgent during a search for a Haqqani network senior leader in Afghanistan's Paktia province today, military officials reported.

The security force also seized firearms in the operation, officials said.

In Afghanistan operations yesterday:

-- An Afghan and coalition security force killed Taliban leader Mir Jan Lala in Helmand province. He was responsible for providing intelligence to Taliban senior leadership for planning attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

-- An Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, arrested a Taliban leader who leads an improvised explosive device attack cell in Kandahar province and detained some other suspected insurgents in the operation.

-- A combined Afghan and coalition security force in Helmand province detained several suspected insurgents during a search for a Taliban weapons distributer.

-- In Paktia province, security combined force arrested a Haqqani network leader suspected of being responsible for transferring weapons and IEDs. The security force also detained another suspected insurgent and seized an assault-style rifle.

-- A combined force in Logar province arrested a Haqqani leader alleged to be responsible for facilitating weapons and directing attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. The security force also detained two other suspected insurgents and seized a rifle.

In Nov. 11 operations:
-- An International Security Assistance Force patrol seized and destroyed nearly 1,320 pounds of homemade explosives and a banned fertilizer used to make explosives, along with IED initiators and components, during a joint air and ground patrol in Zabul province. The patrol destroyed all cache items at the location.

-- A combined force in Kunduz province arrested a senior Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator suspected of having organized the purchase and storage of rifles, machine guns, ammunition, mortar systems and fertilizer used in making explosives. The security force also seized grenades and assault-style rifles with large quantities of ammunition.

-- In Ghazni province, security combined force arrested a Taliban leader suspected of having organized and directed attacks on Afghan and coalition forces.

-- A combined force in Paktia province arrested a Haqqani network leader believed to have planned and organized the transfer and emplacement of IEDs. The security force also detained two other suspected insurgents and seized a stockpile of Afghan army uniforms, grenades, a rifle and associated gear.

-- In Logar province, a combined force arrested an insurgent during a search for a Taliban leader suspected of supplying Taliban fighters with IEDs and mortars.

-- Afghan and coalition forces in Helmand province seized and destroyed 5,048 pounds of dry opium, 44 pounds of brown heroin and more than 145 gallons of a chemical used in heroin manufacturing.

In Nov. 10 operations:
-- Afghan and coalition forces killed two heavily armed insurgents engaged in threatening activity in Paktia province.

-- A combined force arrested three insurgents during a search for a Taliban IED facilitator in Kandahar province.

-- In Helmand province, a combined force killed Zafran, a Taliban direct-action cell leader believed to be responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

-- A Taliban IED facilitator and suicide-bomber operations coordinator in Kunduz province was arrested along with another suspected insurgent.

-- In Kandahar province, a combined force arrested three insurgents during a search for a Taliban IED facilitator.

-- A combined force in Helmand province arrested a Taliban leader believed to be involved in the illegal movement of explosives and IED materials across the Afghan border. The security force also detained a several other suspected insurgents.

-- A combined force detained two insurgents during a search for a Taliban operative who is believed to coordinate the movement of IEDs throughout Kunduz province.

-- In Kandahar province, a combined force arrested a Taliban leader believed to be responsible for coordinating suicide-bomber operations and high-profile attacks targeting Afghan and coalition troops. The security force also seized 6 pounds of heroin.

-- A combined force detained an insurgent and seized 2 pounds of opium during a search of a Taliban IED construction and attack facilitator in Nangarhar province.

In Nov. 9 operations:
-- A combined force in Jowzjan province arrested a senior leader who directed Taliban fighters. The security force also detained another suspected insurgent and seized grenades, an assault-style rifle, a handgun and ammunition.

-- Afghan and coalition forces seized and destroyed nearly 2,400 pounds of opium and 33 pounds of heroin in Helmand province after observing and following a pickup truck traveling along a known drug-smuggling route.

-- Afghan and coalition forces killed two armed insurgents engaged in threatening activity in Kunar province.

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 6, 2012 - A combined Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani network leader in Afghanistan's Logar province today, military officials reported.

The arrested leader is suspected of being directly involved in the final stages of planning a vehicle-bomb attack targeting Afghan and coalition forces

In other Afghanistan operations today:
-- A combined force detained two insurgents and seized bomb-making materials, a shotgun, ammunition and weapons gear during a search for a Haqqani network leader in Paktia province.

-- In Kunduz province, a combined force arrested a senior Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator and weapons trafficker suspected of financing the acquisition of weapons and coordinating their transfer and delivery to insurgents. The security force also detained another suspect.

In operations yesterday:

-- Afghan and coalition security forces detained several insurgents, killed two enemy fighters and seized and destroyed 132 pounds of homemade explosives in Uruzgan province.

-- In Zabul province, the Afghan provincial response company, enabled by coalition forces, detained several insurgents and seized and destroyed 220 pounds of homemade explosives and a cache of weapons and ammunition.

Combined Force Arrests Taliban Leader

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 2, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader in Afghanistan's Kandahar province today, military officials reported.

The arrested insurgent leader is suspected of organizing improvised explosive device operations, kidnappings and attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, officials said.

During the operation, officials said, the security force also detained two suspected insurgents.

In other operations today:
-- In Helmand province, a combined force detained two suspected insurgents during a security operation while searching for a Taliban leader. The Taliban leader is believed to be responsible for distributing munitions to Taliban insurgents and serves as the functional head of a Taliban direct-action cell.

-- In Nangarhar province, a combined force arrested a Taliban facilitator who is believed to have organized attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and enabled the movement of extremists in central Kunar province. During the operation, the force also detained two suspected insurgents.

-- In Paktiya province, an Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani leader suspected of directing attacks against government officials in the province and also working directly with Taliban leaders to carry out the kidnappings and executions of several Afghans. The force also detained a suspected insurgent during the operation.

And, a combined force arrested a Haqqani leader in Logar province Oct. 30. The arrested insurgent leader is alleged to have organized and executed IED attacks.

Combined Force Arrests Taliban Facilitator

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 1, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban facilitator in Afghanistan's Helmand province today, military officials reported.

The arrested Taliban insurgent is responsible for the Aug. 7 insider attack in Paktia province that killed one U.S. service member and wounded three, officials said.

During the operation, Afghan troops also seized what is believed to be the Taliban insurgent's Afghan army identification card. Another suspected insurgent was also arrested.

In other operations today:
-- A combined force arrested a Haqqani facilitator and detained a number of other suspects in Khost province. The arrested facilitator was directly tied to the June 20 suicide bomber attack on Afghan and coalition forces in the Khost district.

In Oct. 31 operations:
-- Afghan Provincial Response Company Ghazni, enabled by coalition forces, seized a large cache of explosive material in Ghazni province. Following the operation, Afghan and coalition forces recovered 3,750 pounds of ammonium nitrate, a known component in making explosives. All seized materials were destroyed at the location.

-- A combined force killed a Haqqani leader, Irfan, in Paktia province. Irfan, also known as Asayal and Hamza, was responsible for directing attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and coordinating the movement of weapons and bomb-making materials for the attacks.

In Oct. 30 operations:
  -- Afghan National Police Crisis Response Unit members, enabled by coalition forces, detained more than a dozen suspected insurgents and seized a large cache of weapons, ammunition and explosive devices in Parwan province. The Afghan and coalition force also recovered more than a dozen AK-47 assault rifles and several 82 mm mortar rounds and hand grenades.

Commander: Afghan Forces Gaining Capability, Respect

American Forces Press ServiceWASHINGTON, Oct. 23, 2012 - Comparing insider attacks in Afghanistan to the desperate suicide missions Kamikaze pilots launched during World War II, a Marine commander in southwestern Afghanistan said the insurgents have failed to put a wedge between the coalition and the increasingly capable Afghan forces preparing to assume full security responsibility there.

Marine Corps Col. John Shafer, commander of Regimental Combat Team 6, called insider attacks a drastic, last-ditch effort by a desperate insurgency struggling to gain an advantage. But aside from requiring new security measures to protect Afghan national security forces as well as coalition members, the attacks have fallen flat in terms of derailing the relationship between them, he said.

Speaking by teleconference during an interview with American Forces Press Service and the Pentagon Channel, Shafer reported steady progress in the Afghan security forces' development during the 10 months since his Marines and sailors arrived in Helmand province.

Initially, offensive actions and targeted raids helped to create a less hostile environment for the fledging Afghan security forces to develop their capabilities, Shafer said. "Then, as we moved into the summer months, ... we ensured that the Afghan national security forces -- both the army and police forces -- had the ability to occupy the spaces that we helped create through our offensive actions earlier in the year," he said.

Now, the Afghans have taken on greater security responsibility that Schafer said has enabled his forces to scale back their operations as they prepare to redeploy.

"We reduced the force in the regimental combat team by approximately 60 percent, and we have made up the difference with the Afghan national security forces," he said. "So ... the Marines of the regional combat team ... effectively created the conditions to allow the Afghan national security forces to come in and create the space for them to be able to effectively operate."

As the Afghan forces show their increasing ability to conduct independent operations, Schafer said, they're gaining the respect of the Afghan people.

"Initially, there was hesitation from the local national perspective, because they didn't know how capable their Afghan national security forces were," he said. "But ... as a result of the thinning of the [International Security Assistance Force] and coalition forces, the Afghan national security forces have had to step up to meet the challenges that the Taliban have presented. And overwhelmingly, they have done very well and been very successful.

"And with that, it has really bolstered the confidence of the local national population and ... given the Afghan national security forces credibility in the eyes of the people of Afghanistan," Shafer continued. "So I think we are well on track."

Noting a key lesson learned during the drawdown in Iraq, Shafer said population support will be critical to long-term mission success in Afghanistan.

"In any counterinsurgent environment that you are operating in, both the insurgency and the counterinsurgent forces are dependent on the local national population," he said. "The population is what will eventually carry the day for you. So he who is most closely aligned with the population will eventually be ... the winner of the conflict.

"So what we have tried to do is offer the local national population a choice that is better for them and their future, by selecting and siding with the government of Afghanistan over what the insurgency choice offers them," Shafer said. "And I think that was very much true as well in Iraq."

As U.S. and coalition forces draw down in Afghanistan, Shafer said, they're ensuring the Afghan forces recognize that responsibility and conduct themselves as representatives of the Afghan government.

He expressed pride in his Marines and sailors, who often operate behind the scenes providing the ongoing support that has enabled progress to take place.

"They have done it all in a period [when] we have doubled the size of the battle space, ... reduced the force by two-thirds, ... transitioned lead security responsibility in many of the districts to the Afghan national security forces, ... repositioned our headquarters from one location to another and sent about 40 percent of our headquarters home," Shafer said. "And in doing it, they haven't skipped a beat."

Coalition Expresses Regret for Possible Civilian Casualties

WASHINGTON, Oct. 16, 2012 - International Security Assistance Force officials today expressed regret that an Oct. 14 coalition operation against suspected insurgents planting roadside bombs in the Nawa district of Afghanistan's Helmand province may have killed three Afghan civilians.

"The coalition extends its deep regret for this tragic incident," officials said in a written statement issued from ISAF headquarters in the Afghan capital of Kabul. "We also extend our sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who died, and we take full responsibility for what occurred."

Officials said the coalition will work closely with Afghan officials to determine what happened and why, and that they also will meet with the family members of those who died to personally express ISAF's regret and condolences.

The operation did not involve close air support as reported in some media, officials said, adding that the incident remains under investigation.

Afghan-led Force Arrests Taliban Facilitator

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9, 2012 - An Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, arrested a Taliban facilitator and improvised explosive device producer in Afghanistan's Kandahar province today, military officials reported.

The arrested facilitator is suspected of managing the construction of large quantities of IEDs, and organizing the transfer of the IEDs and other weapons to support the insurgency.

He also was believed to be directly involved in organizing and executing IED placement, targeting Afghan and coalition forces.

The security force detained several suspected insurgents and seized 2 pounds of illegal narcotics.

In other operations today around Afghanistan:

-- A combined security force in Paktika province arrested a Haqqani network member believed to be responsible for January and May suicide bombings in Paktika and to have direct ties to a recent suicide bombing in Khost province. The security force also detained two suspected insurgents and seized firearms.

-- A combined security force in Paktia province arrested a Haqqani member believed to have developed and executed complex attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also facilitated the transport of weapons to support other insurgent attacks. The security force seized a fully configured remote-controlled IED, bulk explosives, IED components, grenades and fuses.

In operations yesterday:

-- A combined force killed a Taliban leader and two other insurgents in Kunar province. The Taliban leader, Abdullah, was accused of shooting down a CH-47 Chinook helicopter in Kunar on July 25, 2011. The combined force conducted a precision airstrike after identifying Abdullah engaging in insurgent activity with two other militants in an isolated area away from civilians.

-- A combined force in Kunar province killed Manzoor, a weapons facilitator and Taliban leader, and two other insurgents. The combined force conducted a precision airstrike after identifying Manzoor engaging in insurgent activity with two other militants in an isolated area away from civilians.

-- In Ghazni province, a combined force killed a Taliban leader and arrested another. As the Afghan and coalition troops tried to take Abdul Rahman into custody, the armed leaders attempted to fire upon them. The security force engaged, killing Abdul Rahman. Also known as Mola Kaka, he is alleged to have recruited suicide bombers for assassination attempts on Afghan Local Police leadership and also to have organized the safe passage of Taliban leadership. The Taliban leader who was arrested is believed to have conducted attacks against Afghan citizens and to have been behind an IED attack that targeted a coalition convoy. The security force also detained a several suspected insurgents and seized assault-style rifles.

In Oct. 7 operations:

-- A combined force killed a Taliban leader and another insurgent in Wardak province. The security force conducted a precision airstrike after identifying the Taliban leader, Izzatullah, and another militant engaging in insurgent activity in an isolated area away from civilians.

-- In Ghazni province, a combined force saw a man engaging in insurgent activity, and after ensuring no civilians were in the area, killed him with a precision airstrike.

In Oct. 6 operations:

-- A combined security force in Nangarhar province arrested a Taliban leader suspected of being a part of the Shirafat attack network operating in Nangarhar and to be associated with numerous kidnappings and murders. The security force also detained two suspected insurgents and seized firearms.

-- An Afghan-led security force in the Gardez district of Paktia province, supported by coalition troops, arrested a senior Taliban leader suspected of maintaining working relationships with senior Haqqani network leaders. He also is believed to be responsible for planning and directing attacks on Afghan and coalition forces, smuggling weapons, and planting IEDs throughout Logar province's Pul-e Alam and Baraki Barak districts. In addition, he is alleged to have managed the storage and delivery of IEDs and assault rifles to Taliban insurgents for use against Afghan and coalition forces. The security force also detained several suspected insurgents.

-- A combined force in Kunduz province's Qalah-ye Zal district detained several suspected insurgents during a search for a senior Taliban leader believed to be planning an attack targeting Afghan and coalition forces.

-- Afghan and coalition forces killed several insurgents in Kandahar province's Panjwai district with a precision airstrike after identifying the insurgents burying an IED and ensuring no civilians were in the area. No civilians were harmed and no civilian property was damaged.


-- In Ghazni province's Waghaz district, a combined security force killed an armed insurgent and arrested a senior Taliban leader believed to have attacked Afghan and coalition forces using IEDs, mortars and rockets. He also was believed to be in charge of the Ghazni's Taliban education system. The security force also detained another suspected insurgent and seized grenades, blasting caps and weapons accessories.

-- A combined force in Paktia province's Dzadran district detained several suspected insurgents during a search for a Haqqani network facilitator suspected of coordinating the acquisition of suicide vests and weapons to be used in attacks on Afghan and coalition forces.

-- After identifying militants engaging in insurgent activity in an isolated area in Paktia province's Dzadran district, Afghan and coalition forces killed them with a precision airstrike. No civilians were harmed, and no civilian property was damaged.

-- A combined security force in Nangarhar province's Achin district arrested a senior Taliban leader believed to provide lodging, weapons and intelligence knowledge to support the insurgency. The security force detained several suspected insurgents and seized a firearm and explosive material.

-- In Kunar province's Watahpur district, a combined security force killed two armed insurgents with a precision airstrike after identifying a group preparing to attack Afghan and coalition forces. No civilians were harmed, and no civilian property was damaged.

In Oct. 5 operations:

-- The Afghan special police crisis response unit, enabled by coalition forces, seized a large cache of weapons during a short-notice operation in Kabul province's Surobi district. The combined force recovered 85 mortar rounds, about two dozen recoilless rifle rounds and 20 rocket-propelled grenades.

-- A targeted raid by a coalition unit on a suspected insurgent compound in Helmand province's Nahr-e Saraj district yielded 1,600 pounds of materials used in making explosives. The coalition force retained a small portion of the materials for future exploitation and destroyed the rest. No civilians were harmed.

-- An Afghan-led operation rescued several Afghan civilians held hostage in a Taliban compound in Ghazni province's Nawah district. The insurgent captors fled the compound when they saw the Afghan and coalition forces approaching. The hostages were found in poor health, officials said, but they have received medical care and are recovering.

-- Using a precision airstrike, Afghan and coalition forces killed a Haqqani network leader and another insurgent while they were placing an IED for a future attack.

In Oct. 4 operations:

-- Afghan Local Police defended Marzak village in Paktika province's Sar Howzah district when insurgents attacked their checkpoint. Partnered with Afghan uniformed police, national army special forces and coalition special operations forces, the local police quickly responded to the attack, reportedly killing dozens of insurgents and forcing the rest to flee into the mountains. A few local police members taken captive by the insurgents during the attack were rescued. They received medical treatment and were in stable condition, officials said. No civilians were harmed in the engagement.

-- Afghan and coalition forces arrested a Taliban leader in Ghazni province, along with a Taliban facilitator and IED manufacturer and another insurgent.

-- Mullah Abdul Ghafar Akhund, a Taliban leader based in Kandahar province's Panjwai district, was killed during a security operation in the province's Zhari district. A security force conducted a precision airstrike after identifying Abdul and other militants engaging in insurgent activity in an isolated area away from civilians, killing Abdul and two other insurgents. He is believed to have organized numerous IED attacks and coordinated the movement of weapons and ammunition for use against Afghan and coalition forces. No civilians were harmed, and no property was damaged.

In other news, Afghan special police and coalition forces, enabled by the Afghan Interior Ministry's Special Mission Wing, recovered narcotics and weapons during operations throughout Helmand province from Sept. 22 to Oct. 6. The missions resulted in the recovery of about 1,760 pounds of hashish, 1,100 pounds of marijuana seeds, 420 pounds of poppy seeds, several rocket-propelled grenade warheads, a suicide bomber vest and about 20 weapons. The combined force also engaged and killed several insurgents during the two weeks of operations.

Combined Force Kills Multiple Insurgents

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 28, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force killed multiple armed insurgents during an operation to arrest a senior Haqqani facilitator in the Gelan district of Ghazni province today, military officials reported.

As the security force approached the Haqqani facilitator's suspected location, armed insurgents attacked the Afghan and coalition troops with heavy machine gun fire, officials said. The coalition troops returned fire, killing several armed insurgents. No civilians were harmed in the exchange.

The sought-after Haqqani facilitator is believed to be directly involved in several attacks throughout the region, many involving improvised explosive devices, and suicide bombers, resulting in civilian casualties, officials said.

The security force also detained two suspects and seized multiple assault rifles, a heavy machine gun and several explosives, including rocket-propelled grenades, officials said. The weapons and explosives were destroyed.

In other operations today:

-- A combined force detained a number of suspects during an operation to arrest a Taliban leader in the Maiwand district of Kandahar province. The sought-after Taliban leader is suspected of facilitating the movement of weapons throughout the region and reported directly to senior Taliban leaders in order to coordinate insurgent attacks.

-- A combined force arrested a number of suspects and seized several firearms during a search for a senior Haqqani leader in the Sayyid Karam district of Paktiya province. The sought-after Haqqani leader is suspected of directing attacks and coordinating the acquisition of weapons and funding for insurgent activity.

-- A combined force detained a number of suspects and seized multiple firearms during a search for a Haqqani IED attack leader in the Sharan district of Paktika province. The sought-after Haqqani leader is believed to be directly involved in the acquisition and emplacement of IEDs for insurgent attacks.

In Sept. 27 operations:

-- An International Security Assistance Force patrol rescued three Afghans who were being held hostage by Taliban insurgents in the Panjwa'i district of Kandahar province. The ISAF unit, Task Force Arrowhead, observed a number of insurgents load three men, bound and blindfolded, onto a trailer towed by a tractor. The ISAF patrol pursued and stopped the tractor, at which point the insurgents attempted to flee. Task Force Arrowhead troops freed the hostages and detained three of their captors, who were later identified as Taliban members. ISAF learned the three captives had been held by the Taliban for up to six days. The freed men were released by ISAF to Panjwa'i district officials.

Helicopter Makes Forced Landing in Eastern Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, Aug. 28, 2012 - An International Security Assistance Force helicopter made a forced landing in eastern Afghanistan today, military officials reported.
There were no reported fatalities, and the site of the incident is secure, officials said. Initial reporting indicates that there was no enemy activity in the area at the time.
ISAF officials are assessing the circumstances to determine more facts.
In Afghanistan operations today:
-- An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani network leader and three suspected insurgents during an operation in the Zurmat district of Paktia province. The Haqqani insurgent -- an improvised explosive device specialist -- is responsible for numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, including recent attacks against Afghan forces in Zurmat.

-- A combined force arrested a Taliban leader and one other suspect in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. The Taliban leader planned and directed IED attacks and had acquired suicide vests for attacks on Afghan and coalition forces.

-- A combined force detained multiple suspects during an operation to arrest a Taliban leader in the Zharay district of Kandahar province. The Taliban leader directs attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the Zharay and Panjwai districts.

-- A combined force arrested a Haqqani weapons supplier and one suspected insurgent during an operation in the Pul-e Alam district of Logar province. The weapons supplier acquired weapons and IEDs for Haqqani fighters throughout the province. In the days leading to his arrest, the weapons supplier provided funds, weapons and equipment to Haqqani fighters for an upcoming attack.

In an Aug. 26 operation in the Khoshi district of Logar province, a coalition force found and destroyed 136 mortar rounds and 23 rockets.

Combined Force Arrests Taliban Leader in Helmand Province

WASHINGTON, Aug. 20, 2012 - A combined Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Afghanistan's Helmand province today, military officials reported.
　
The leader acted as a go-between for senior Taliban leadership in the province, communicating orders for attacks to subordinate Taliban fighters in the area, officials said. He also oversaw the placement and activation of improvised explosive devices in the area so insurgents were able to operate safely, they added.
　
The security force also detained a suspected insurgent and seized more than $3,400 in cash during the operation.
　
In other operations today:
-- A combined force detained numerous suspected insurgents in Kandahar province's Kandahar district while searching for a Taliban leader responsible for directing roadside bomb placement in the Panjwai and Zharay districts.
　
-- In Logar province's Mohammad Aghah district, a combined force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani network arms supplier who provides weapons, explosives and bomb components to Haqqani fighters throughout the province.
　
Meanwhile, Afghan and coalition forces confirmed today that one of several insurgents killed in an Aug. 17 airstrike in Kunar province's Watahpur district was Taliban leader Yasir, who had ties to al-Qaida. Yasir organized and conducted attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and was involved in an Aug. 8 suicide attack in Asadabad district, which killed three U.S. soldiers and a U.S. civilian.
　
Yesterday, Afghan and coalition officials confirmed that a senior Taliban leader, Maulawi Nur Mohammad, and his deputy, Atiqullah, were among dozens of heavily armed insurgents killed in an Aug. 18 airstrike in a remote area of Kunar province's Chapah Darah district.
　
In operations yesterday:
-- A combined force in Laghman province's Alisheng district searching for a Taliban leader who acquires weapons and ammunition for insurgents and facilitates attacks against Afghan and coalition forces came under attack. Combined Force Arrests Senior Insurgent Leader

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a senior Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan terrorist group leader in the Chahar Darah district of Afghanistan's Kunduz province today, military officials reported.

The insurgent leader directed improvised explosive device attacks in Kunduz province. He also acquired IEDs, weapons and rockets and distributed them to insurgents throughout the region, officials said.

The security force also detained two additional suspected insurgents and seized IED-making components during the operation, officials said.

In other operations today:
-- In the Chimtal district of Balkh province, a combined force detained several suspects during an operation to arrest a Taliban weapons supplier. The weapons supplier provides machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and IEDs to insurgents in the district.

-- A combined force arrested a Taliban-affiliated insurgent who coordinated insurgent activity in the Kandahar district of Kandahar province. He also acquired IED-making components for Taliban fighters in the area. The security force also detained one suspect during the operation.

-- In the Nawah-e Barakzai district of Helmand province, a combined force detained several suspects during an operation to arrest a Taliban explosives expert. The insurgent explosives expert operates throughout central Helmand, acquiring, constructing and distributing IEDs to insurgents.

-- In the Khugyani district of Nangarhar province, an Afghan-led, coalition supported security force arrested a Taliban leader responsible for multiple attacks on Afghan and coalition forces.

-- In the Sabari district of Khost province, an Afghan-led, coalition-supported force detained several suspects and seized multiple weapons.

In operations yesterday:
-- A precision airstrike killed multiple insurgents during a combined force operation against insurgents operating in combined force the Watahpur district of Kunar province. The airstrike caused no civilians injuries or property damage.

-- A combined force detained three suspects in the Gelan district of Ghazni province.

-- Also in the Gelan district of Ghazni province, another combined force detained multiple suspects and seized explosives during an operation to arrest a Taliban leader. The leader plans and directs attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. The explosives were safely destroyed by the security force.

-- An Afghan-led, coalition-supported force arrested multiple insurgents during an operation in Kabul. The security force arrested the insurgents as they were finalizing plans for an attack in the Afghan capital. The security force also seized a large cache of explosives, suicide vest components, weapons and ammunition.

In an Aug. 11 operation, combined force discovered an insurgent bomb-making facility and seized more than 400 pounds of explosives, some IED-making components and detained one suspect in the Muqer district of Ghazni province.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9, 2012 - In the Andar district of Afghanistan's Ghazni province, an Afghan and coalition security force today arrested a Taliban-affiliated insurgent responsible for acquiring and emplacing improvised explosive devices along Highway 1, military officials reported.

The Taliban-affiliated insurgent also is responsible for several rocket attacks against Afghan and coalition convoys in the region, officials said.

At the time of his arrest, officials said, the insurgent was actively planning to conduct several more IED attacks along Highway 1, and also was planning to kidnap an Afghan government official.

The security force also detained two suspected insurgents during the operation, officials said.

In other operations today:
-- In the Now Zad district of Helmand province, a combined force detained several suspects and seized several assault rifles during an operation to arrest a Taliban explosives cell leader. The Taliban leader controls an insurgent cell specializing in IEDs and suicide attacks.

The Taliban leader controlled an insurgent cell responsible for multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the region, officials said.


At the time of his arrest, officials said, the Taliban leader was in the process of acquiring heavy weapons and explosives for future attacks.


The security force also detained one suspected insurgent during the operation, officials said.


In other operations today:
-- In the Chimtal district of Balkh province, a combined force detained one suspect during a search for a senior Taliban leader. The senior leader funds insurgent operations and coordinates attacks throughout the district.

-- A combined force detained numerous suspects during an operation to arrest a Taliban leader in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province. The Taliban leader oversees insurgent activity in the area and provides heavy weapons, improvised explosive devices and ammunition to Taliban-associated insurgents throughout the district.

In other news, officials announced yesterday that Haji Shakur, a Taliban leader in the Chora and Baluchi districts of Uruzgan province, was one of the suspects arrested during a July 31 operation in the Tarin Kot district of Uruzgan province. The operation was conducted by an Afghan security force supported by coalition troops.

Shakur was a mid-level Taliban leader who controlled dozens of insurgent fighters and is responsible for conducting a number of insurgent attacks in both Chora and Baluchi districts. He provided those under his control with ammunition and weapons, and was involved in recruiting local Afghans from the area for the Taliban.

Shakur was also an explosives expert responsible for building IEDs used to attack Afghan and coalition forces.

In operations around Afghanistan yesterday:

-- A combined force detained an insurgent during a route clearance operation in Ghanzi province's Gelan district.

-- In Ghanzi province, a combined force killed an insurgent during a small-arms engagement in the Muqer district.

-- In Kapisa province, a coalition airstrike killed 10 insurgents in the Tagab district.

-- In Khost province, a combined force found and cleared an IED in the Sabari district and another in the Terezayi district.

-- A combined force killed six insurgents during a small-arms engagement in Logar province's Kharwar district.

-- In Logar province's Baraki Barak district, a combined force killed an insurgent who was emplacing an IED.

-- A combined force found and cleared an IED in Nangarhar province's Rodat district.

-- A combined force found and cleared an IED in Paktika province's Bermal district.

Combined Force Detains Several Suspected Insurgents

WASHINGTON, July 6, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a search for a Taliban improvised explosive device expert in the Ghorak district of Afghanistan's Kandahar province today, military officials reported.

The expert constructs IEDs and supplies them to Taliban leaders throughout the region for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, officials said.
In other Afghanistan operations today:

-- Officials confirmed that the Lashkar-e-Taiba insurgent leader Ammar was killed June 29 during an airstrike in the Watahpur district of Kunar province. Ammar had managed a network of insurgents and directed attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the province. The airstrike also killed the LeT leader, Khatab Shafiq, and several other insurgents. A follow-on assessment confirmed the airstrike had not injured any civilians and had not damaged any civilian property.

-- In the Terayzai district of Khost province, a combined force detained several suspected insurgents and seized one firearm and multiple grenades during a search for a Haqqani leader. The Haqqani leader plans and coordinates attacks against the Afghan government throughout the province.

-- A combined force detained two suspected insurgents during a search for a Taliban bomb maker in the Khugyani district of Nangarhar province. The Taliban bomb maker plans and coordinates attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the region.

-- A combined force found and cleared four IEDs in Ghazni province. Two IEDs were found in the province's Ghazni district, one in the Khwaia Omari district and one in the Gelan district.
-- A combined force detained one insurgent in Ghazni province's Andar district.
-- A combined force discovered a weapons cache in Ghazni province's Ab Band district. The cache contained items used to create IEDs.

-- A combined force killed one insurgent in Kunar province's Darah Ye Pech district.
-- A combined force found and cleared an IED in Logar province's Pul-E Alam district.
-- A combined force found and cleared four IEDs in Nangarhar province. Two IEDs were found in the province's La'L Pur district, one in the Chapahar district and one in the Achin district.
-- A combined force killed one insurgent in Paktika province's Orgun district.
-- A combined force discovered a weapons cache containing grenades and mortar rounds used to make IEDs in Wardak province's Maidan Shahr district.

-- A combined force killed two insurgents in Wardak province's Sayyidabad district. The insurgents were found with IED-making materials, small arms and ammunition.
