Combined Force Arrests Taliban Facilitator

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 1, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban facilitator in Afghanistan's Helmand province today, military officials reported.

The arrested Taliban insurgent is responsible for the Aug. 7 insider attack in Paktia province that killed one U.S. service member and wounded three, officials said.

During the operation, Afghan troops also seized what is believed to be the Taliban insurgent's Afghan army identification card. Another suspected insurgent was also arrested.

In other operations today:
-- A combined force arrested a Haqqani facilitator and detained a number of other suspects in Khost province. The arrested facilitator was directly tied to the June 20 suicide bomber attack on Afghan and coalition forces in the Khost district.

In Oct. 31 operations:
-- Afghan Provincial Response Company Ghazni, enabled by coalition forces, seized a large cache of explosive material in Ghazni province. Following the operation, Afghan and coalition forces recovered 3,750 pounds of ammonium nitrate, a known component in making explosives. All seized materials were destroyed at the location.

-- A combined force killed a Haqqani leader, Irfan, in Paktia province. Irfan, also known as Asayal and Hamza, was responsible for directing attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and coordinating the movement of weapons and bomb-making materials for the attacks.

In Oct. 30 operations:
  -- Afghan National Police Crisis Response Unit members, enabled by coalition forces, detained more than a dozen suspected insurgents and seized a large cache of weapons, ammunition and explosive devices in Parwan province. The Afghan and coalition force also recovered more than a dozen AK-47 assault rifles and several 82 mm mortar rounds and hand grenades.

Combined Force Arrests Taliban Weapons Supplier

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 29, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban weapons supplier during an operation in the Andar district of Afghanistan's Ghazni province today, military officials reported.

The weapons supplier provided Taliban leaders in Ghazni with improvised explosive devices, other weapons and ammunition, officials said.

The security force also detained two additional suspected insurgents during the operation.

Also today, a combined force arrested a Taliban leader and detained two other suspects in the Kandahar district of Kandahar province. The Taliban leader distributed weapons and explosives to Taliban fighters. He also is suspected of being involved in planning the assassination of an Afghan government official in Kandahar.

In an operation yesterday in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province, a combined force found mortar rounds, two IEDs, bomb-making equipment, and 7,716 pounds of ammonium nitrate, a compound used to produce homemade explosives.

Combined Force Detains Taliban Leader

WASHINGTON, May 23, 2012 - An Afghan-led, coalition-supported security force detained a Taliban leader during an operation in the Dasht-e Qal'ah district of Afghanistan's Takhar province today, military officials reported.

The detainee was the senior insurgent leader in the neighboring Darqad district, and was responsible for planning attacks against Afghan government officials, Afghan security forces and coalition troops, officials said. He also provided weapons, ammunition and explosive devices to insurgents under his command.

In other Afghanistan operations today:
-- In the Nawah-ye Barakzai district of Helmand province, a combined force detained several suspects during a search for an insurgent leader. The sought-after insurgent is responsible for roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition troops. He also supplies weapons and explosive devices to insurgents under his command.

-- An Afghan-led, coalition-supported force detained a Haqqani leader and one other insurgent in the Khost district of Khost province. The leader organized roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the Nadir Shah Kot and Manduzai districts.

-- A combined force detained a Haqqani leader and one other insurgent in the Nadir Shah Kot district of Khost province. The leader conducted roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the district, and was responsible for the movement of explosives into Khost province.

-- A combined force called in an airstrike that killed two insurgents and captured three suspects during an operation to detain a Taliban leader in the Khugyani district of Ghazni province. The sought-after insurgent leader plans kidnappings and conducts attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the district. He also supplies insurgents with weapons and equipment.

And yesterday, combined forces in eastern Afghanistan discovered eight weapon caches that in total contained about 7,150 pounds of aluminum and ammonium nitrates used to make improvised explosive devices, more than 1,000 rounds of rifle ammunition, three 107 mm rockets, two 155 mm and one 120 mm artillery rounds, six 82 mm mortar rounds, two rocket-propelled grenades, two RPG warheads and a launcher, seven small arms and various amounts of clothes, communications equipment and IED-making components.
