U.S. CONGRATULATES PEOPLE OF ESTONIA ON THEIR NATIONAL DAY

FROM:  U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT
On the Occasion of Estonia's National Day
Press Statement
John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
February 23, 2015

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Estonia as you celebrate 97 years since the founding of your republic.

President Obama’s historic visit to your country last year was a visible demonstration of the ties between our two countries. As he said then, the energy and optimism of today’s Estonians is a model for those yearning for freedom.

Estonia is a global leader in e-governance, Internet freedom, cybersecurity, and free-market economics.

Most recently, Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus and I had the opportunity to discuss issues of mutual importance at the NATO Ministerial in December 2014.

As you raise the blue, black, and white flag of Estonia over Toompea Hill, I wish all Estonians peace and prosperity in the year ahead. The United States stands with you as a steadfast partner and looks forward to continuing to expand ties between our peoples.

U.S. CONGRATULATES PEOPLE OF ESTONIA ON THEIR NATIONAL DAY

FROM:  U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT
On the Occasion of Estonia's National Day
Press Statement
John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
February 20, 2014

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Estonia as they celebrate 96 years since the founding of their republic in 1918.

Estonia is a key ally and a recognized leader on cyber security and Internet freedom. In December 2013, Estonia and the United States formalized our commitment to continue to work together to enhance an open, secure, and reliable information and communications infrastructure while we also continue to build our law enforcement capacity, educational and cultural linkages, and civil society partnerships.

As Estonia marks its tenth anniversary in NATO, we recognize its commitment to peace and to our collective security. We particularly appreciate that Estonia continues to meet the NATO goals of committing two percent of its Gross Domestic Product on defense. We also welcome Estonia’s efforts to increase bilateral trade and investment, as well as its support for the goals of the U.S.-EU Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.

As Estonians celebrate their independence with family and friends, the United States stands with them as a steadfast partner and friend. I wish all Estonian people continued peace and prosperity.

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to congratulate the people of Estonia as you celebrate the 95th anniversary of your independence February 24.

The United States celebrates your independence and all that Estonians have contributed to the region and world. The United States is proud to have you as a committed NATO Ally and a close friend. The Estonian people, through innovative thinking and hard work, continue to demonstrate new approaches to technology that help you develop and sustain a vibrant, free-market democracy. Your leadership in cyber-security, e-governance, and technological innovation sets a global example, and has already benefited global citizens from Tunisia to Mongolia, Moldova to Libya, serving as a model for others to follow.

As you celebrate this special day, know that the United States stands with you as we work together toward a bright and prosperous future for all our citizens.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM CIA WORLD FACTBOOK

After centuries of Danish, Swedish, German, and Russian rule, Estonia attained independence in 1918. Forcibly incorporated into the USSR in 1940 - an action never recognized by the US - it regained its freedom in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the last Russian troops left in 1994, Estonia has been free to promote economic and political ties with the West. It joined both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004, formally joined the OECD in late 2010, and adopted the euro as its official currency on 1 January 2011.
